Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) provides the latest updates to the Windows 2000 family of operating systems. These updates are a collection of fixes in the following areas: application compatibility, operating system reliability, security, and setup. Windows 2000 SP2 includes the updates contained in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Windows 2000 SP2 is not a required upgrade.

Note: In a settlement agreement reached in January 2001 to resolve a dispute over Microsoft's distribution of its Java implementation, Sun and Microsoft agreed to limit the duration of Microsoft's use of Sun's source code and compatibility test suites to support the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM). Microsoft began phasing out the MSJVM in its products after the settlement was reached. Recognizing the need to provide a smooth transition for current users of the MSJVM, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft have agreed to extend Microsoft's license to use Sun's Java source code and compatibility test suites. This extension allows Microsoft to support the MSJVM until September 30, 2004, and gives Microsoft the ability to address potential security issues, effectively giving customers another year to manage the transition. As a part of the phase out of the MSJVM, Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (which includes the MSJVM) and Security Patches for Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 will no longer be available for download after June 30, 2004.

Supported operating systems: Windows 2000

There are two installation options for Service Pack 2 available from the Web: The express installation and the network download.


To download the express installation

1. Open your browser and go to the Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 Web site.


2. Click Download Windows 2000 SP2.


3. Choose a language from the drop-down list, and then click Next.


4. Click Express Installation.

If you use a Web browser other than Internet Explorer 5 or later, you might be unable to install Service Pack 2 using the express installation. You can still install Service Pack 2 by downloading the entire service pack from the Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack Web site to your computer and running W2ksp2.exe locally.


To download Service Pack 2 from the network

1. Open your browser and go to the Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 Web site.


2. Click Download Windows 2000 SP2.


3. Choose a language from the drop-down list, and then click Next.


4. Click Network Installation.

During the service pack download, the compressed service pack executable file (W2ksp2.exe) is saved on your hard disk. You can extract this compressed program file with or without starting the installation program.


To extract the compressed program file and start the installation program

• At the command prompt, type W2ksp2.exe, and then press ENTER.


• Or, click the W2ksp2.exe file on your computer desktop.

• At the command prompt, type w2ksp2.exe -x, and then press ENTER.
