Windows Management Framework 5.0 Preview May 2014 includes updates to Windows PowerShell, Windows PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC), and Windows PowerShell ISE. It also includes OneGet, PowerShellGet, and Network Switch cmdlets.

This release includes new features and functionality in Windows Management Framework 5.0, including the following:

Windows Management Framework 5.0 makes updated management functionality available for installation on Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8.1 Pro, and Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

Network Switch Cmdlets
The Network Switch cmdlets enable you to do switch, virtual LAN (VLAN) and basic Layer 2 network switch port configuration on Windows Server 2012 R2 logo-certified network switches. Microsoft remains committed to support the Datacenter Abstraction Layer (DAL) vision, and to show value for our customers and partners in this space. You can use these cmdlets to do the following:

  • Global switch configuration, such as:
    • Set host name
    • Set switch banner
    • Persist configuration
    • Enable or disable feature
  • VLAN configuration:
    • Create or remove VLAN
    • Enable or disable VLAN
    • Enumerate VLAN
    • Set friendly name to a VLAN
  • Layer 2 port configuration:
    • Enumerate ports
    • Enable or disable ports
    • Set port modes and properties
    • Add or associate VLAN to Trunk or Access on the port
OneGet

OneGet is a new way to discover and install software packages from around the web. With OneGet, you can:

  • Manage a list of software repositories in which packages can be searched, acquired, and installed
  • Search and filter your repositories to find the packages you need
  • Seamlessly install and uninstall packages from one or more repositories with a single Windows PowerShell command
PowerShellGet

PowerShellGet is a new way to discover, install, and update Windows PowerShell modules. New in WMF 5.0 Preview May 2014, PowerShellGet contains a set of cmdlets that enable users to interact with an online module gallery.

  • Discover modules from the gallery by running the Find-Module command
  • Install modules from the gallery by running the Install-Module command
  • Update installed modules by running the Update-Module command
Updates to the following applications:
  • Windows PowerShell 5.0
  • Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE)
  • Windows PowerShell Desired State Configuration

      System Requirements

      Operating Systems: Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2

      **IMPORTANT**
      Systems that are running the following server applications should not run Windows Management Framework 5.0 at this time.
      • System Center 2012 Configuration Manager (not including SP1)
      • Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard

      Servers that are running the following applications can now run WMF 5.0. The versions listed are the minimum releases required to run WMF 5.0.

      After the updates are applied, WMF 5.0 is supported on servers that are running these applications. WMF 5.0 is otherwise supported on Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8.1 Pro, and Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

      WMF 5.0 requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5. You can install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 from the Microsoft Download Center.

      Installation Instructions

      InstructionsTo prepare for installation of Windows Management Framework 5.0:

      1. Download the correct package for your operating system and architecture. The following architectures are supported.
        • Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8.1 Pro, and Windows 8.1 Enterprise
          • x64: Windows8.1-KB2894868-x64.msu
          • x86: Windows8.1-KB2894868-x86.msu
      2. Close all Windows PowerShell windows.

      To install WMF 5.0 from Windows Explorer (or File Explorer in Windows Server 2012 R2)
      1. Navigate to the folder into which you downloaded the MSU file.
      2. Double-click the MSU to run it.

      To install WMF 5.0 by using Command Prompt
      1. After you have downloaded the correct package for your computer's architecture, open a Command Prompt window with elevated user rights (Run as Administrator). On the Server Core installation options of Windows Server 2012 R2, Command Prompt opens with elevated user rights by default.
      2. Change directories to the folder into which you have downloaded or copied the WMF 5.0 installation package.
      3. Run one of the following commands.
        • On x64-based computers that are running Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows 8.1 Enterprise, or Windows Server 2012 R2 run Windows8.1-KB2894868-x64.msu /quiet.
        • On x86-based computers that are running Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows 8.1 Enterprise, or Windows Server 2012 R2 run Windows8.1-KB2894868-x86.msu /quiet.

      To uninstall Windows Management Framework 5.0:

      • In Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features\Uninstall a program, locate and then uninstall the following installed Windows Update:
