Windows Management Framework 4.0 Preview includes updates to Windows PowerShell, Windows PowerShell ISE, Windows PowerShell Web Services (Management OData IIS Extension), Windows Remote Management (WinRM), Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), the Server Manager WMI provider, and a new feature for 4.0, Windows PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC).

System Requirements
Operating Systems: Windows Server 2012, Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
Before you install WMF 4.0 Preview, be sure to read the WMF 4.0 Preview Release Notes, and read about known incompatibilities with the following Microsoft server-class applications.
- System Center 2012 Configuration Manager (not including SP1)
- System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 (including SP1)
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2013, Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, and Microsoft Exchange Server 2007
- Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010
- Windows Small Business Server 2011 and Windows Small Business Server 2008
Systems that are running the preceding server applications should not run Windows Management Framework 4.0 Preview at this time.
WMF 4.0 Preview is otherwise supported on Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, and Windows Server 2012.
WMF 4.0 Preview can only be installed on the following operating systems.
- Windows 7 with Service Pack 1
- Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1
- Windows Server 2012
WMF 4.0 Preview requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5. You can install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 from the Microsoft Download Center.
In addition, the following requirements apply:
- To install Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) on computers that are running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1: before installing Windows Management Framework 4.0 Preview, install the optional Windows PowerShell ISE feature by running the Add Roles and Features Wizard in Server Manager.
- Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on computers running Windows 7: To install SP1, see Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1.
Installation Instructions
- Download the correct package for your operating system and architecture. The following architectures are supported.
- Windows 7 SP1
- x64: Windows6.1-KB2819745-x64-MultiPkg.msu
- x86: Windows6.1-KB2819745-x86.msu
- Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
- x64: Windows6.1-KB2819745-x64-MultiPkg.msu
- Windows Server 2012
- x64: Windows8-RT-KB2799888-x64.msu
- Windows 7 SP1
- Close all Windows PowerShell windows.
- Uninstall any other copies of Windows Management Framework 4.0.
To install WMF 4.0 from Windows Explorer (or File Explorer in Windows Server 2012)
- Navigate to the folder into which you downloaded the MSU file.
- Double-click the MSU to run it.
To install WMF 4.0 Preview by using Command Prompt
- After you have downloaded the correct package for your computer's architecture, open a Command Prompt window with elevated user rights (Run as Administrator). On the Server Core installation options of Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or Windows Server 2012, Command Prompt opens with elevated user rights by default.
- Change directories to the folder into which you have downloaded or copied the WMF 4.0 Preview installation package.
- Run one of the following commands.
- On x86-based computers that are running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, run Windows6.1-KB2819745-x86.msu /quiet.
- On x64-based computers that are running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, run Windows6.1-KB2819745-x64-MultiPkg.msu.
- On computers that are running Windows Server 2012, run Windows8-RT-KB2799888-x64.msu /quiet.

To uninstall Windows Management Framework 4.0 Preview:
- In Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features\Uninstall a program, locate and then uninstall the following installed Windows Update:
- KB2819745 - for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
- KB2799888 - for Windows Server 2012
