Legacy Update: Get back online, activate, and install updates on your legacy Windows PC

The Custom Updates Publishing Tool in SMS 2003 R2 and the Patchinstall in Systems Management Server 2003 SP3 clients do not support update packages for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, which are in Microsoft Update Standalone Package (.msu) format. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 updates obtained from Microsoft Product Support or the Microsoft Download Center cannot be authored and published using the Custom Updates Publishing Tool.

To resolve this problem this hotfix will update the publishingtool.dll (in the Custom Updates Publishing Tool) and the patchinstall.dll (in the SMS 2003 SP3 client) to provide support for update packages which are in .msu format.

Feature Bullet Summary:

• The Custom Updates Publishing Tool is updated to support the Microsoft Update Standalone Package (.msu) file type. The Microsoft Update Standalone Package (.msu) option will be available in the Installer Type drop-down box in the Create/Modify Update Wizard.
• The following rules have been added as a saved rule and available when selecting Use existing rule when creating or modifying an update:
  • Windows XP SP3 Systems
  • Windows Vista Systems
  • Windows Vista SP1 Systems
  • Windows Server 2008 Systems
• SMS 2003 SP3 client file patchinstall.dll is updated to support the .msu file type

1. Extract the following two files from R2MSUSupportENU.exe.
   
   
   
   • SMS2003R2--KB953592-X86-ENU.exe
   
   
   • SMS2003-SP3-KB953591-X86-ENU.exe
   
   
   
   


2. Install SMS2003-SP3-KB953591-X86-ENU.exe on the site server. A package beginning with name “KB953591” will be created. Create an advertisement to distribute this hotfix (patchinstall.dll) to the appropriate collection of client computers.


3. Run “SMS2003R2--KB953592-X86-ENU.exe /X” to retrieve the following file:
   
   
   
   • sms2003r2-cupt-kb953592-x86-enu.msp
   
   


4. On the computer running the Custom Updates Publishing Tool, run the command;
   
   
   
   • sms2003r2-cupt-kb953592-x86-enu.msp
   
   
   
   to install the hotfix (publishingtool.dll)

Four “existing rules” (see article KB953592) are added when you install the hotfix.
