Windows File Server SMB SQL OLTP Performance |
Windows File Server SMB SQL OLTP Performance
A file server running Windows Server 2012 is equipped to host storage for server applications, such as for Microsoft® SQL Server®. The workloads are dominated by non-cached I/O data, which is relatively unstudied (from a file server perspective) in comparison to workloads with significant cached data or metadata traffic, such as the end-user, home-folder scenarios. This document describes the changes that address previously unknown, fundamental issues since the creation of the Windows kernel infrastructure for the current SMB client. These are demonstrated on Windows Server 2008 R2 with the SMB 2.1 protocol, on spinning media, under both synthetic loads (IOMETER) and SQL OLTP driven through Microsoft SQL Server 2010.
