The information in this screencast is provided as-is and is subject to change without notice. This demonstration highlights how the User State Migration Tool (USMT, included in the Windows Automated Installation Kit for Windows 7 Beta) can be used to migrate user files and settings from Windows XP to Windows 7 Beta using a default installation. In the default installation, Windows 7 Beta will create a “windows.old” folder containing user accounts, application settings and other user profile information to be migrated from the Windows XP operating system. Using the USMT command line tool, this video demonstrates how new offline file migration using hard-links can quickly remap the files and settings into appropriate locations on the Windows 7 Beta operating system. Hard-link migration works by creating a catalog of links to files and settings intended for migration; those file links are then applied to the new operating system. The demonstration also explains how to prepare a simple batch file paired with USMT tools, which can be reused across multiple computers. After a hard-link migration, once you have ensured that all files and settings were migrated from windows.old into the Windows 7 Beta operating system, you can use Disk Cleanup utility and “Remove Legacy Versions of Windows” command to remove the windows.old folder.
