Retail is a demanding and dynamic industry in which retailers must balance the difficulties of managing to razor-thin margins with the need to roll out new IT-based applications to maintain their competitive edge. IT is being used to automate everything from point-of-sale applications to promotional and marketing applications, department-specific applications, and distribution and warehousing systems. Retail is a challenging business in the best of times, and retailers in particular are feeling the squeeze of the current economic conditions and are looking for any means to obtain a competitive advantage. This white paper was developed based on multiple in-depth interviews with members of the Microsoft account team responsible for the retailer’s implementation and rollout. The information from these interviews was combined and validated with information from the IDC Business Value Database.
