Installation Instructions for a Windows HPC Server 2008 Based Cluster on HP Proliant DL145 G2 Hardware |
Learn a typical installation of HPCS.
This paper describes the procedure for the installation of a Windows HPC Server 2008 (HPCS) package on a typical set of servers in a self-contained environment, i.e. depending on no external networking services. A companion paper details the installation of the Linux based Rocks+ package on an identical set of server systems. Further papers detail the integrations that can be made between the authentication, file systems and job submission components Linux and Windows based clusters.
Overall the installation has a significant number of steps. This is mainly due to the fact that most of the cluster configuration decisions are available to the person installing the cluster. As a result the installation process is slightly longer than the Rocks+ based counterpart, but the resulting cluster can be tailored very closely to the eventual application software that it will be executing.
The resulting cluster is quite flexible. Most of the parameters of the cluster can be modified, in most cases through the GUI management tools.
