Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit 1.2

  • Published:
  • Version: 1.2
  • Category: Application
  • Language: English

The wizards in the File Server Migration Toolkit use Distributed File System (DFS) to maintain Universal Naming Convention (UNC) paths and to simplify the consolidation and migration process

  • Many organizations today are consolidating older file servers to reduce the cost of managing multiple file servers and to increase the efficiency of storage allocation and backup tasks. When organizations migrate data to file servers running Windows Server® 2003 and Windows Server 2008, they can take advantage of new features, such as Shadow Copies for Shared Folders and the Volume Shadow Copy service, and enhancements to other technologies, such as Distributed File System (DFS).

System Requirements

Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003 R2 (32-Bit x86), Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

  • DFS Consolidation Root Wizard and Dfsconsolidate.exe requirements

    1. On a DFS Consolidation Root Server, you must configure Windows Firewall to allow WMI calls as the DFS Consolidation Root Wizard uses WMI to determine if the DFS Consolidation Root Server is acluster. For more information on connecting to WMI remotely starting with Windows Vista, see the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=120250). For similar information for Windows Server 2003 and earlier, see the Microsoft Web site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa389290(VS.85).aspx)

    2. The Distributed File System (DFS) root server that hosts DFS consolidation roots must meet the following requirements:

      • The DFS root server cannot be a domain controller.

      • The DFS root server must run one of the following operating systems:

        • Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 2
        • Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition with Service Pack 2
        • Windows Storage Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
        • Windows Server 2008, Enterprise Edition
        • Windows Server 2008, Datacenter Edition
        • Windows Storage Server 2008, Enterprise Edition

      • If the DFS root server is part of a server cluster, before you run the DFS Consolidation Root Wizard, you must create the resource group where the consolidation root will be created oryou must identify an existing resource group. The resource group must contain an IP Address resource and a Physical Disk resource.

Clients that access the DFS Namespaces that are set up by the DFS Consolidation Root Wizard and Dfsconsolidate.exe must run one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows Server 2003 family
    • Windows XP Professional
    • Windows 2000 Server family
    • Windows 2000 Professional
    • Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 6a (SP6a)
    • Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with SP6a
    • Windows NT Vista
    • Windows Server 2008 family

    File Server Migration Wizard requirements

    1. On a source server, you must configure Windows Firewall to allow WMI calls as the File Server Migration Wizard uses WMI to determine if the source server is a cluster. For more information onconnecting to WMI remotely starting with Windows Vista, see the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=120250). For similar information for Windows Server 2003 and earlier, see the Microsoft Web site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa389290(VS.85).aspx).

    2. The target file servers and source file servers that you specify in the File Server Migration Wizard must meet the following requirements:

      • Source file servers must run Windows NT Server 4.0, the Windows 2000 Server family, the Windows Server 2003 family, or the Windows Server 2008 family.

      • Target file servers must run operating systems in the Windows Server 2003 family, the Windows Storage Server 2003 family, the Windows Server 2008 family, or the Windows Storage Server 2008family.

      • Source and target file servers can be server clusters. For target file servers that are server clusters, before you run the File Server Migration Wizard, you must create the resourcegroups that will contain the File Share resources (for Windows Server 2003 clusters) or File Server resources (for Windows Server 2008 clusters)—or you must identify existing resource groups. The resource groups must contain a Physical Disk resource and at least one Network Name resource that was Not created by the DFS Consolidation Root Wizard and Dfsconsolidate.exe.

      • Target volumes must be formatted with the NTFS file system

      • Source folders must be shared. If you want to consolidate folders that are Not shared, you must share them first.
