Windows Server AppFabric Training Kit |
This training kit contains a complete set of materials that will enable you to learn the core capabilities in Windows Server AppFabric. The kit has two main sections, one for the AppFabric Hosting capabilities and the other for the AppFabric Caching capabilities. There is also an option below to download a Virtual Machine that is ready for you to use with the training kit.
Windows Server AppFabric is a set of integrated technologies that make it easier to build, scale and manage Web and composite applications that run on IIS. Windows Server AppFabric targets applications built using ASP.NET, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF). This training kit will take you through all the parts of AppFabric and how to develop applications using the capabilities AppFabric provides. The training is broken up into two classes as follows:
- AppFabric Hosting Services
This 2 day class contains recorded lectures, demos and hands-on-labs targeted at the .NET developer who wants to learn about building services and using the capabilities in AppFabric to host and manage both code based services built using Windows Communications Foundation and Workflow Services using Windows Workflow Foundation. A significant proportion of the class deals with building long running workflow services and dealing with state, correlation, and the management of these services. This class contains 11 modules. - AppFabric Caching Services
This 2 day class contains recorded lectures, demos and hands-on-labs targeted at the .NET developer who wants to understand the AppFabric distributed cache, how to program against the cache and how the cache works so that they can use the cache to build more scalable and better performing applications.

- Windows 7; Windows Server 2008; Windows Server 2008 R2; Windows Vista
Windows Server AppFabric can be installed on the following operating systems:- Windows 7
- Windows Server 2008 R2
- Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2
- Windows Vista Service Pack 2
The supplied Virtual Machine below has a Windows 7 32 bit guest operating system installed.- Supported Architectures:
- 32-bit (x86)
- 64-bit (x64)
- Hardware requirements:
- Minimum Hard Disk Space:
- Computer with an Intel Pentium-compatible CPU that is 1 GHz or faster for single processors; 900 MHz or faster for dual processors; or 700 MHz or faster for quad processors.
- Prerequisite software:
- The training kit is built for a developer workstation with a full Visual Studio 2010 Professional Installation and a full IIS installation. Detailed installation instructions for the kit and the underlying physical or virtual environment setup are contained in the training kit.
Installation Instructions
- The kit comes with a Virtual Machine that contains a trial of Windows 7 (32 bit) and Visual Studio 2010. Both the OS and Visual Studio are trial copies that require extending the trial periods. The OS is good for two further 30 day extensions after you first launch the VM, you can of course copy and unpack the VM as many times as you like. Use the command SLMGR /REARM to extend the trial period for a further 30 days – you can do this twice before the copy of Windows requires activation. The copy of Visual Studio is a 30 day trial that can be extended to 90 days. The 30 day period has expired so you will need to first click the link in the message that comes up when you first launch Visual Studio from the VM to extend the trial a further 60 days by entering a trial product key.
- The VM is a Virtual PC 2007 VM. If you wish to use this VM with Windows 7 or in Hyper-V, you will first need to remove the Virtual PC additions (From Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel in the VM), then you can install the appropriate extensions in Windows 7 Virtual PC or in Hyper-V.
- The training kit presentations, hands-on-labs and solution files for the labs come in the AppFabricTrainingKit.ISO file. You can mount this file to your VM directly as a DVDdrive (from settings -> DVD Drive) and then run the setup program to install the kit into your Virtual Machine.
- If you are running the labs directly on a physical machine, then you will need to mount the ISO file using an ISO mounting tool (search the web for "ISO Mounting Tool").
