The Microsoft Windows Journal Reader Supplemental Component provides programmatic read access to files in the Journal format. This simple component takes a stream containing a Journal file and returns a stream containing the file’s content in XML format. The XML returned by the component conforms to the Journal Reader schema. This schema is documented in Journal Reader Schema Reference.

System Requirements

Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional Edition, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

  • Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Development Kit 1.7

  • MSXML 3.0

  • Visual Studio version 6 with Service Pack 5 or Visual Studio .NET (Both may be installed on the same computer.)

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (recommended)

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 (required for installation only)


On Windows 2000, Service Pack 4 and all current updates should be installed.

Installation Instructions


  1. After downloading the setup executable, click the Start button, click Run, and then type drive:\path\Microsoft Windows Journal Reader Component.msi where drive is the letter of your the drive containing the setup and path is the path to the setup file. Click OK.

  2. At the welcome screen, click the Next button.

  3. Read the license agreement and, if you agree, select "I accept the terms in the license agreement." Click the Next button.

  4. Click Install to install the component.

  5. Click Finish.
