This management-level security guidance is policy oriented and focuses on managing the risk/benefit equation with regard to strategies for reducing malware in midsize businesses.

This paper provides information that can be used to help block spyware, malware, and access to malicious sites. It also provides an understanding of what is and isn't malware, malware types and behaviors, and malware risk management. In addition, the paper addresses challenges faced by midsize business IT generalists who seek to reduce malware, including common information systems, common threats and vulnerabilities, educating end users and policies, and balancing risk management and business needs. Information is also provided about solutions, including physical and logical security, proactive vs. reactive policies and procedures, infrastructure ownership and responsibilities, and monitoring and reporting. Finally, the paper provides guidance to help customers develop strategies for reducing malware, including assessing malware risks and developing strategies to manage malware risks.
