The Microsoft® Word 97 Web Authoring Tools update makes working with HTML documents in Word easier than ever.

The Word 97 Web Authoring Tools update makes working with HTML documents in Microsoft® Word easier than ever. With these updated Web Authoring features, you can publish your documents to a Web server from Word, check for broken hyperlinks, and create great-looking pages with new templates, styles, and backgrounds. In addition, you can use the improved Conversion Wizard to specify a common background and common elements for the documents you convert.

The Web Authoring Tools update adds these new features to Word 97:

  • Publish to the Web in Word
The Web Authoring Tools update installs the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard version 1.5. You can use this wizard to transfer your files to any Web server that supports the FrontPage Server Extensions. To publish your files for the Web, simply click Publish to the Web on the File menu in Word.
  • Check Links
With the Check Links command, you can have Word search a document for hyperlinks and linked images and then verify that the target files exists. If Word can't find a target file, it prompts you to update the broken link.
  • New Templates, Styles, and Backgrounds
This update installs new Word templates, styles, and backgrounds. These include an updated online resume template as well as jade, papyrus, and rattan background images. You can add a background image to a new Web page by using the Web Page Wizard.
  • Improved Conversion Wizard for Web Pages
This updated version of the Conversion Wizard, a tool that converts multiple files from one format to another, includes new options for converting Word documents to Web page documents. With these new options, you can easily give your converted Web pages a consistent look. For example, when you convert your documents, you can choose to have Word add a background or page elements, such as a title area or navigation links, to the top and bottom of all your Web pages.
  • Web Page Preview for Multiple Browsers
If you have more than one Web browser installed, you can choose which one you want Word to use when you click the Web Page Preview command.
  • Web Page Moving
If you save an HTML document in a different folder, Word prompts you to repair broken links in your document. This Web Page Moving feature gives you the option to copy linked images to the new folder, update the image path so it points to the new folder, or leave the links as they are.
  • Edit Graphics by Double-Clicking
If you double-click a picture in an HTML document, Word starts your default image-editing program, such as Microsoft Photo Editor (included on the Microsoft Office 97 CD).
