In June 2010, the Microsoft DirectX SDK release included a new High Level Shading Language (HLSL) feature enabling the compiler to auto-magically generate derivative computations of functions. The new Symbolic Derivative operator F’() helps developers reduce authoring and maintenance pain for advanced shader creation using the HLSL compiler. Applications include computation of line and surface tangents, surface normals, surface curvature, Jacobians of texture to screen space mappings, velocities, accelerations, and more.
