Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1a (SP1a) includes updates that have occurred for the operating system, server applications, and security features since the general product availability in April 2001.

• Small Business Server 2000 SP1a contains the same updates as Small Business Server 2000 SP1 (released on August 16, 2002), plus Microsoft Windows® 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4). If you are not running Small Business Server 2000 SP1, install SP1a for the latest updates to the operating system, server applications, and security features.
  
  Note  If you are already running SP1, there is no need to install SP1a. Small Business Server 2000 SP1a contains the same updates as SP1, plus Windows 2000 SP4.

  You can get the English version of Small Business Server 2000 SP1a two ways: You can order the Small Business Server SP1a CD, or you can download it directly from this page.
  
  Order the CD
  
  Customers in the United States and Canada can order a CD of SP1a after August 1, 2003 and it will be delevered in four to six weeks. Visit the How to Get Small Business Server SP1a page for more information. Before August 1, you can continue to order CD's of SP1.

  Notes
  
  
  • The download does not include Microsoft Outlook® 2002. To obtain Outlook 2002, order the Small Business Server 2000 SP1a CD.
  • The download does not include Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000 Service Pack 3a (SP3a). If you have SQL Server 2000 installed, please check the service pack level of your installation. For security reasons, Microsoft highly recommends that you install SQL Server 2000 SP3a if you do not have it. You can get SQL Server 2000 SP3a at the Download Center.
  
  To identify which version of Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 you are running
  
  
  1. Open the Small Business Server Administrator Console.
  2. Open the Server Status (BackOffice Home) page. This page displays by default when the Small Business Server Administrator Console is opened.
  3. Click the About hyperlink under Helpful Links on the right side of the Server Status page.
  If the version says Service Pack 1, you do not need to install Service Pack 1a.
  
  To identify which version of Windows 2000 Service Pack you are running
  
  
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type winver and then press ENTER.
  Note  If you are currently running Small Business Server 2000 SP1 with Windows 2000 SP3, Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 2000 SP4.
  
  Small Business Server 2000 SP1a also differs from SP1 in that it does not include or install the Microsoft virtual machine (VM), which provides support for running Java programs.
  
  Note  Existing installations of the Microsoft VM are not affected. Microsoft is no longer able to provide a download of the Microsoft VM for computers that do not already have the Microsoft VM installed. For more information, see the Java page.
  
  To determine if you are running the Microsoft VM
  
  
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type cmd, and then click OK.
  3. At the command prompt, type jview and then press ENTER.
  If you are not running the Microsoft VM, you receive the following error message:
  
     'jview' is not recognized as an internal or external
      command, operable program or batch file.

  Documentation Notes
  
  In the documentation for Small Business Server 2000 SP1a, the title for the SP1a Release Notes has been changed to include "SP1a" in most languages. In other places where "Service Pack 1" is used, the text has not been changed.
  
  Note  On the Microsoft Web site, "Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1" may be used in some cases to refer to either SP1 or SP1a. No other changes or fixes are included in this update. • For you to install Small Business Server 2000 SP1a, your computer must be running the non-evaluation version of Small Business Server 2000. Additionally, your server must meet the following disk space requirements.
  
  
  • For Web Download
    
    Folder: Program Files
    Space Required:
    
    
    • 5 MB for Small Business Server 2000 SP1a installation files.
      
    • 165 MB for Microsoft Exchange 2000 SP3.
      
    • 130 MB for Windows 2000 SP4 temporary files. This disk space is used only for extracting the service pack and is freed up after Setup moves the files to the ClientApps folder.
    
    Folder: ClientApps
    Space Required:
    
    
    • 125 MB for Windows 2000 SP4.
    
    Folder: Microsoft Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files folder
    Space Required:
    
    
    • 300 MB. Depending on your Internet Explorer settings, the disk space will be freed up after the download is complete.
    
    Folder: Temporary space for Small Business Server 2000 SP1a download

    • 300 MB. After the service pack installation files are extracted, you can delete the download file (Sbssp1.exe) to free up disk space.

• You must download the necessary Small Business Server 2000 SP1a Setup files and save them to your Small Business Server computer. Before you begin, ensure that you have enough disk space (see System Requirements).
  
  Important  If you are using a dial-up modem or have a slow connection to the Internet, you should order the CD rather than download the service pack. For estimated download times, see the following:

  • Estimated download time: 12 hours, 20 minutes
  
  
  1. Download Small Business Server 2000 Service Pack 1a and save the file (Sbssp1.exe) to your Small Business Server computer. Running the file from its current location is not recommended.
  2. Double-click Sbssp1.exe and extract it to systemroot\Program Files\Microsoft Small Business Server SP1.
     1. When the file extraction dialog box appears, click Browse, and then create the Microsoft Small Business Server SP1 folder in the Program Files folder. If you extract the file to a different location, Setup creates the Microsoft Small Business Server SP1 folder in Program Files and then copies the files to this folder. Click Unzip to extract the service pack files.
     2. Click OK on the dialog box that informs you that the files have been extracted, and then click Close on the file extraction dialog box.
  3. Run systemroot\Program Files\Microsoft Small Business Server SP1\SP1setup.exe.
  4. If Windows 2000 SP4 is not installed, a message appears, prompting you to install it. Click OK, and then follow the on-screen instructions. After the computer restarts, Small Business Server 2000 SP1a Setup continues.
  5. If Exchange 2000 Server is installed, but Exchange 2000 SP3 is not, a message appears, prompting you to install the service pack. Click OK.
     1. When the file extraction dialog box appears, click Browse, and then create a temporary folder in which to extract the Setup files.
     2. After extracting the Setup files, click OK on the dialog box that informs you of the successful extraction, and then click Close on the file extraction dialog box.
     3. Run <Folder>\Server\Setup\I386\Update.exe, where <Folder> is the name of the temporary folder you created in Step 5a.
     4. Follow the on-screen instructions. The computer restarts following the installation of Exchange 2000 SP3, and then Small Business Server 2000 SP1 Setup continues.
        
        Important  If the server computer does not automatically restart after you have installed Exchange 2000 SP3, you must restart it manually. After the computer restarts, Small Business Server 2000 SP1a Setup continues.
     
     
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete Small Business Server 2000 SP1a Setup.
     
     Notes
     • After Exchange 2000 SP3 is installed, you can delete the temporary folder to free up disk space.
     • If you have downloaded Small Business Server 2000 SP1a and you need to restart Setup, click Start, click Run, and then type systemroot\Program Files\Microsoft Small Business Server SP1\SP1Setup.exe.
