Use the information in this spreadsheet to determine the number of federation servers recommended for your AD FS 2.0 deployment.

Use the information in this spreadsheet to determine the number of federation servers recommended for your Active Dirctory Federation Services (AD FS) 2.0 deployment. This AD FS capacity planning spreadsheet can be further enhanced by comparison to the information presented in the estimation table of the “Estimation table: Determine the number of AD FS servers to deploy in your organization” section of Plan for and deploy AD FS for use with single sign-on (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj151794.aspx). This estimation table provides content that is applicable to multiple Microsoft cloud services, including Windows Intune and Office 365. The following is a breakdown of the differences between these two sets of estimation guidance:The TechNet estimation table assumes a load based on user count alone, whereas the capacity planning spreadsheet derives a load from user count and application count. The TechNet estimation table’s assumed load, based on O365 usage monitoring for Lync/Exchange Online/SPO scenarios, equals to 10 requests per hour for each user. This is equal to entering 10 in the app count cell C7 and 0 in C6. The capacity planning spreadsheet uses a fudge factor of 0.4, 0.6, or 0.8 and a unit of time (cell D4) to try to create a “peak” load estimate, whereas the TechNet estimation table’s load estimate is a steady state (10 requests per hour for each user). The TechNet estimation table’s calculated load is based on an assumption of one user creating one authN during the period of timeThe TechNet estimation table’s assumption for machine capacity is more conservative than that of the AD FS capacity planning spreadsheet and it does not vary for the various endpoints. The TechNet estimation table assumes 60 requests per second (216K tokens per hour) per machine for capacity. To get to users per machine, you divide 216K tokens/hr machine by 10 req/hr user and get ~21K users/machine (the The TechNet estimation table moves it down to 15000 users/machine for additional fudge factor). The AD FS capacity planning spreadsheet’s assumptions for machine capacity are based on more generic testing in the AD FS test lab (as opposed to the live Office 365 user monitoring). Finally, the TechNet estimation table’s table takes redundancy into account, therefore it recommends not one but two federation servers for 15000 users. The AD FS capacity planning spreadsheet does not try to handle redundancy for an all up machine count recommendation. In summary, the TechNet estimation table information is more directly applicable to Office 365 customers and is more conservative in terms of machine capacity (lower) and request load per user (higher). The AD FS capacity planning spreadsheet attempts to handle more scenarios and is less conservative on machine capacity and request load per user / application.
