Creating HPC Cloud Solutions with Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 and Windows Azure: Application Models and Data Considerations |
Includes code samples of parametric sweep, SOA, MPI, and Excel UDF applications that can burst to Windows Azure from Windows HPC Server 2008 R2, and a white paper that provides a technical overview of developing HPC applications that are supported for use in Windows Azure with an on-premises Windows HPC Server cluster, or entirely in Windows Azure with the Windows Azure HPC Scheduler.
- Windows® HPC Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 or later (currently at SP3) enables administrators to increase the power of the on-premises cluster by adding computational resources in Windows Azure. With the Windows Azure “burst” scenario, various types of HPC applications can be deployed to Windows Azure nodes and run on these nodes in the same way they run in on-premises nodes. If you do not require an on-premises cluster, you may rely solely on Windows Azure for your HPC cluster by using the Windows Azure HPC Scheduler.
The HPCAzureBurstCodeSamples.zip download (samples also available online in the Windows HPC with Burst to Windows Azure Training Course) includes samples of parametric sweep, SOA, MPI, and Excel UDF applications that can burst to Windows Azure. The download also includes the AzureBlobCopy utility that is mentioned in the paper. This utility helps you copy files to and from Windows Azure storage, Windows Azure nodes, and on-premises computers. The HPCAzureBurstSampleData.zip download can be used as input data for the image rendering (parametric sweep) sample included in the sample download.
Note: MPI code samples in the download are supported on Windows Azure nodes that are deployed on a Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 cluster that has Service Pack 2 (or later) installed.
Important: Windows Azure HPC Scheduler code samples are available separately:- For download: Windows Azure Training Kit - Includes hands-on labs and demos of Windows Azure "burst" and Windows Azure HPC Scheduler applications. Look under "Big Compute & Big Data".
- Online version: Windows Azure HPC Scheduler Training Course - Includes hands-on labs of Windows Azure HPC Scheduler applications only.
